Opportunities for youth to learn new skills

The City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department recently held a workshop to give young girls an opportunity to learn new skills. The workshop, held over the weekend, allowed the youth to participate in various activities, including self-defence training. Read more below:

The workshop was held at the Scottsdene Community Hall in Kraaifontein on 4 September 2021 with 20 girls from Scottsdene participating (Ward 111).

The Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department partnered with the local Recycle to Upcycle Organisation, which conducted arts and craft sessions  teaching the participants how to make products which can then be sold. Follow-up sessions are planned to assist the youth in how to sell these products.

A session in self-defence was held by Budo Karate Dojo. This organisation will do similar sessions at follow up events. Participants also had the opportunity to learn basic entrepreneurial skills. 

‘We are grateful to partner with local organisations, which were part of the workshop, and to teach the youth new skills. Our youth of today are tomorrow’s leaders and we should be giving them opportunities to learn, experience and build character and self-esteem.  These workshops not only provide them with new skills, but also teach them interpersonal skills, which is important for their future working environment. I would like to thank the organisations and our officials who made this possible,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
